ASCP MLT Requirements: Critical Criteria to Apply

ASCP MLT Requirements: What You Need to Obtain Before Applying?

The American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Board of Certification (BOC) categories all credentials into two types; ASCP & ASCPi

Hence, to keep a hands-on understanding of the ASCP MLT requirements, you have to consider both; MLT ASCP and MLT ASCPi.

ASCP MLT Requirements: For U.S. Applicants

4 routes (set of qualifications, experiences, and training programs) are determined by the board for United States candidates.

You do not need to go for all; only meet one and press the “Apply Now” button.

Route 1

  • Associate degree from an approved college or university
  • If you do not have an associate degree, you must obtain 60 semester hrs of academic credits from an authentic educational institution.
  • MLT program that must be obtained by NAACLS/ABHES within the last 5 years.

Route 2

  • As of January 1, 2023, that prerequisite of route 2, which is a CLA (ASCP) license, has been banned.

Route 3

For this, you must have

  • Associate degree with six -semesters hr in chemistry and six-semesters hr biology (make sure to acquire within, or in complement to, the associate degree)
  • In case you do not have an associate degree, you must have educational credits of 6o semester hours with 6 semester hr in biology and 6 semester hrs in chemistry.
  • A medical laboratory training program of 50 weeks approved by the U.S. military must be obtained within the previous ten years.

Route 4

  • Associate degree with the combination of 9 quarter hrs in chemistry (6 semester hrs) & biology (six semester hrs) which may be received within, or in an addendum to, an associate degree.
  • Academic credits of 60 semester hrs with biology and chemistry 6 semester hours in each can be used as an alternative of an associate degree.
  • Clinical background in chemistry, immunology, blood bank, hematology, and urine/other body fluids (experience must be of 3 years).

ASCP MLT Requirements: For International Applicants

Three routes for the ASCP international medical lab technician are fixed by the board; needs to fulfill just one.

Route 1

To meet this route requirements, you must have

  • Diploma in Medical Laboratory Science from a technical institution that must be of two years including training in microbiology, hematology, chemistry, and immunohematology.

Route 2

  • Chemistry or biological science, two year diploma from an accredited educational institution
  • With a two year diploma, you must get a medical lab science training program (training must be in microbiology, hematology, chemistry, and immunohematology)

Route 3

To ace MLT ASCPi route three eligibility requirements

  • Struggle to earn a chemistry or biological science 2-year diploma from an authorized educational institution.
  • Clinical experience of three years in microbiology, chemistry, hematology, and blood bank.
