American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Board Of Certification (BOC)
The American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP BOC) is the world’s largest credentialing body for laboratory professionals. Founded in 1928, it has certified over 610,000 professionals globally.
ASCP BOC offers more than 20 certificates to U.S. and international medical lab candidates. All exams have different eligibility routes, exam content areas, and study material. Candidates must meet these route requirements to qualify for the exam.
Almost all ASCP exams, except a few (PBT), consist of 100 multiple-choice questions (MCQs) that the examinee has to cover in 2.5 hours. These questions are chosen from relevant exam content areas with different percentages from each.
The exams use a Computer Adaptive Testing (CAT) system that adjusts question difficulty based on your performance. If you answer a question correctly, the next one will be slightly harder. If you get a question wrong, the system will present a slightly easier one.
In the BOC exam, there is neither a set percentage one must get to pass nor a fixed number of questions one must solve to pass. If examinees get scores above the passing point, they qualify for the certificates. BOC exams have a 0-999 score range, and 400 is the minimum that is vital to becoming ASCP certified.
ASCP Certification Types
Medical Laboratory Scientist ASCP Certification
The MLS (medical laboratory scientist ASCP ) also called clinical laboratory scientist or generalist, performs a variety of tests in immunology, urinalysis, chemistry, microbiology, hematology and blood banking to diagnoses and treatment of diseases. MLS aids physicians in choosing the accurate technique when treating patients.
The American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification divides its certificates into four categories: MLS Certificates, Technician Certificates, Technologist/Scientist Certificates, and Specialist Certificates.
American Society for Clinical Pathology Technologist Certification
American Society For Clinical Pathology Board Of Certification offers nine different types of technologist certificates for U.S. and 10 for international. These certificates are same for both but one is extra of international candidates. Certificates include MB, M, C, H, BB, CG, CT, HTL and CTgyn ASCPi, Gynecologic Cytologist (CTgyn if or Internationals Only).
