What are the eligibility requirements for ASCP MLT route 1?

The ASCP BOC (American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification) suggests 4 eligibility paths for U.S applicants and 3 for international applicants.

Meeting one route prerequisite is paramount to being able to sit in the ASCP MLT exam.

ASCP MLT Route 1: For United States Candidates

The following are all the requirements for ASCP MLT route 1 for U.S lab professionals:

  • Associate degree from an approved (nationally/regionally) institution.
  • 60 semester hours of academic credits from an authorized college or university (nationally/regionally) can be used in lieu of an associate degree
  • Within the last five years, successful completion of an ABHES/NAACLS approved MLT program.

Special Note: The education of ABHES/NAACLS approved MLT program is only accepted for a period of 5 years from the date of completion.

ASCP MLT Route 1: For International Candidates

  • Medical Laboratory Science diploma (2 years) from a technical institution, which includes training in chemistry, microbiology, hematology, and blood banking.

Diplomas/degrees in Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) include biomedical lab science, clinical lab science, medical lab science, and medical technology.

Special Note: Approved/authorized by a Ministry/governing regulatory association. Countries must have educational institutions or programs accredited by an International Advisory Board assigned by the ASCP BOC if they have no prevalent system for accreditation. The foreign candidate’s eligibility will be checked by a transcript evaluation (acceptable). The international credentials must be equal to United States credentials.

ASCP MLT Route 1 Training Documentation Form: For Foreign Applicants

For international candidates who are meeting the ASCP MLT route 1 requirements have to fill out a training documentation form.

This training documentation form comprises two parts:

  • Part I: For applicants
  • Part II: For the program director

Part I: Specific for Applicants

This part required the applicant’s name and the name of the program (It must be completed by the applicant).

Part II: Specific for Program Director

This section must be completed and signed by the program director to make it acceptable.

It shows the candidates

  • Area of training (blood banking, chemistry, hematology, and microbiology)
  • Type of degree
  • Date of completion
  • Length of clinical training program

The program director needs to verify the candidates’ training experience by adding the following information:

  • Program director’s name
  • Title
  • Program director signature
  • Name of program
  • Date
  • Program director email address
  • Name of institution and telephone number
  • Institution address

Things To Remember: Make sure to attach a letter of authenticity (it must be printed on original letterhead) with this training documentation from your program director. Your letter of authenticity must state that the training documentation form was dated, signed, and completed by the program director.

ASCP MLT Route 1 Requirements: How to Submit the Documentation?

To apply for the MLT ASCP certification, you need to submit the documentations in the following format:

  • Must be uploaded in PDF format; pictures are not accepted
  • The file should be less than 10 MB
  • Make sure to avoid electronic signatures, they are not acceptable
  • Original and handwritten signatures are acceptable.
  • The file must contain the applicant’s name as it appears on the ASCP customer record or examination application.
  • Never send letters of authenticity and documentation forms via email.
