The American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP BOC) offers its ASCP MT degree to medical lab scientists.

Therefore, it fixed 6 paths (routes) for United States candidates and 5 paths for international candidates; satisfying one is essential.

ASCP MT Degree: Eligibility Routes for U.S.
Route 1
- Baccalaureate degree
- NAACLS approved medical lab scientist program.
Route 2
- ASCP MLT credential
- Clinical experience of two years in the required subjects
- Baccalaureate degree with 24 quarter hours in both biology (microbiology one-semester hr) and chemistry (biochemistry or organics, one semester hr)
Route 3
- The requirements of this route are not fixed by the board again. The board has banned its prerequisites as of January 1, 2023.
Route 4
- A bachelor’s degree in biology and chemistry must be completed with 24 hours of quarters in both. One semester hr in microbiology and one in organics or biochemistry must be included with 24 quarter hours.
- Clinical experience in related subjects that must be of five years.
Route 5
- International MLS ASCP certificate
- Transcript evaluation to verify the educational equivalence of a U.S. baccalaureate degree
- Related subjects’ clinical experience of 5 years
Route 6
- A medical lab training program of fifty weeks from the U.S. military.
- Baccalaureate degree with 16 semester hours in biology (one semester hr in microbiology) & chemistry.
- One year of clinical experience

Route 1
- Baccalaureate degree in chemistry/medical lab science/biological science
- Medical lab training program
Route 2
- Graduation in medical lab science
- Three years of clinical experience
Route 3
- Bachelor’s degree
- Medical lab science’s two-year program
Route 4
- Baccalaureate degree in chemsitry/biological science
- Five years of clinical experience.
Route 5
- 2 years diploma in chemistry/biological science
- Baccalaureate degree
- Five years of clinical experience in the four required areas
