MLT ASCP CM: What of Its Meaning?

The American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP BOC) continues to update its certified professionals’ skills lifelong.

For this purpose, it limited its certification life to only three years.

Once you get the ASCP MLT certificate, you have to update it after three years to maintain it.

Once you do all this process successfully, your certificate uplifts from MLT ASCP to MLT ASCP CM.

It is an integral process that avails you in many ways, like empowering your license and updating your skills based on your field requirements.

According to Walter Oliveria, MASCP, MLS(ASCP)CM SI

“As laboratory professionals, we must endeavor to be lifelong learners in order to maintain and expand our knowledge to stay current in our profession. The Credential Maintenance Program (CMP) challenges me to maintain and expand my knowledge across disciplines within the laboratory medicine field.”

What is MLT ASCP CMP?

The CMP (Credential Maintenance Program) is also an ASCP recertification program that revives your credential for the upcoming three years.

To participate in this program, you have to meet some eligibility prerequisites.

For MLT ASCP, you need to get 36 CE credits in recommended areas.

These areas are

  • 2 points in each; blood banking, hematology, chemistry, and microbiology
  • 1 point of medical ethics like DEI (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion), compliance, molecular diagnostics, education, management, immunology, HIPAA, etc.
  • 1 point in lab/patient safety (i.e., quality assurance, quality control)
  • 26 points in lab areas of interest.

You are responsible for earning your CE (continuing education) credits in your current 3-year credential cycle. For instance, if you earned your MLT ASCP license in August 2021, you have to get your CMP points between August 2021 to August 2024.

How to Apply for the MLT ASCP CM?

  • After login to your account, you need to choose the “Check Progress” option under “My Education.”
  • Examine your completed ASCP and non-ASCP credits
  • After meeting all requirements, you will be asked to submit your CMP declaration to the ASCP BOC review.
  • Struggle to do this at least three months before your certification expiration date.
  • Once you complete the process accurately, you will receive a three-year certification renewal notification.

What Do You Have to Pay for MLT ASCP CM?

$135 is a reinstatement fee that you have to pay due to a late declaration.

It is a fee for your application and certification expiration.

But the board offers you a fee discount of $20 in case you have multiple certifications.

How to Earn CEs (Continuing Education Credits)?

For your comfort, the ASCP BOC presents continuing education programs that meet your CMP requirements and introduce you to the latest technologies.

You should choose these programs according to your points requirements.

Besides this, you can achieve CMP points from non-ASCP resources like CAP (College of American Pathologists).

The credits that you will earn from ASCP will automatically be entered into your ASCP transcript.

But, for non-ASCP credits, you have to do the process by hand (manually).
