MLT to MLS ASCP: How to Change?

The ASCP Board of Certification conducts many exams for lab personnel to award them powerful certificates.

To get an MLT ASCP degree, the board suggests 4 routes for U.S. candidates and 3 for international.

MLT to MLS ASCP: Route 2

The following are the requirements of MLS ASCP route 2 that lead you to change MLT to MLS ASCP:

• ASCP medical laboratory technician (MLT) degree
• A bachelor’s degree with 24 quarter hrs (16 semester hrs) in chemistry (one semester of organic/biochemistry must be included with chemistry 16 semester hours) and 24 quarter hrs in biology ( microbiology 1 semester hr with 16 semesters of biology) from an approved college or university.
• Clinical experience in chemistry, immunology, blood banking, urinalysis and other body fluids, microbiology, and hematology. This experience must be of 2 years and must be obtained within the last 5 years from acceptable laboratory.

MLT to MLS ASCP: For International Candidates

Being MLT ASCPi certified, you must have

• A bachelor’s degree in medical lab science.
• Two years of clinical experience must be obtained from an approved lab within the last five years

Accredited by a governing regulatory association/Ministry.

If the country does not have a prevalent system of approval, the program must be acquired from institutions accredited by an International Advisory Board allocated by the ASCP BOC.

MLT to MLS ASCP/ASCPi: Important Note for Lab and Science Program

Your clinical experience must belong to the following labs:

• Accreditation under ISO 15189
• CMS CLIA certificate of registration, accreditation, compliance
• JCI accreditation
• DoD CLIP certificate of registration, accreditation, compliance

To meet your one year of full-time clinical lab experience, you can use your foreign medical lab science clinical training program, ABHES or NAACLS accredited MLT program, or NAACLS accredited MLS program, if you have any.

To transition from MLT to MLS ASCP, you have to sit for the MLS ASCP exam and successfully pass it.
