ASCP Membership Application Categories & Eligibility Criteria

Here are different ASCP membership categories and eligibility criteria.

Pathologist

U.S. Membership Options

Fellow

Must be a licensed physician certified in anatomic pathology, clinical pathology, or a pathology subspecialty by the American Board of Pathology or any equivalent certifying body.

And must be practicing in the United States or Canada.

International Membership Options

International Physician

Must be a licensed physician certified in anatomic or clinical pathology in the country or region in which you practice.

And must be a member of any appropriate medical or laboratory association in the country or region of practice.

Laboratory Professional

U.S. Membership Options

Laboratory Professional

Must be currently or previously certified by the ASCP Board of Certification (BOC) in one or more categories.

Young Professional Membership

Clinical Scientist Membership

Emeritus Laboratory Professional Membership

International Membership Options

Must currently or previously be certified by the ASCP Board of Certification (BOC) in one or more categories and practice laboratory medicine outside the U.S. and Canada.

Must be a member of any appropriate medical or laboratory association in your country of practice.  

Resident

U.S. Resident Member Option

Resident Member

Must be a resident in training to become a pathologist at an accredited program in the U.S. or Canada.

Fellow-in-Training Membership

Must be a legally qualified physician actively training for a career in pathology.

You must also be enrolled in an accredited training program.

Students

U. S. Membership Options

Medical Student Member

Must be enrolled in a medical school approved by either the,

  • American Association of Medical Colleges,
  • American Medical Association Liaison Committee,
  • Association of Canadian Medical Colleges Accreditation Committee, Or
  • The Bureau of Professional Education of the American Osteopathic Association approved osteopathic medical school.

Laboratory Student Membership

International Membership Options

International Medical Student

Must be enrolled in an accredited college/university science program or a medical laboratory science program approved by an appropriate accrediting agency.

Professional Affiliate

Professional Affiliate

Must be employed by a medical laboratory or in another diagnostic medical setting.

You must also work with or provide services to medical laboratory team members.

Also, you must not meet the requirements for membership under any other category.

International Professional Affiliate

Must be employed by a medical laboratory or in another diagnostic medical setting.

Or must be working with or offering services to members of the medical laboratory team.

And you must not meet the requirements for membership under any other category. Also, you must be working outside the U.S. and Canada.

Renewing Your ASCP Membership
