The ASCP MLS is the certified medical lab scientist by the ASCP and the SBB ASCP is the certified specialist in blood banking by the ASCP board of certification.

CM represents the maintenance of certifications.

So MLS (ASCP) SBB CM means a certified medical lab scientist and specialist in blood banking, with successful maintenance of both certificates.

MLS (ASCP) SBB CM: Why CM?

Every certificate of the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Board of Certification is only valid for three years.

Before completion of your three-year period, you have to participate in the CMP.

What is the CMP?

The CMP represents the Credential Maintenance Program.

It can be recognized as the ASCP certification renewal process or the ASCP recertification process.

At the end of your certificate, “CM” (for instance, MLS (ASCP) SBB CM) demonstrates that it is successfully maintained by the CMP.

MLS (ASCP) SBB CM: How to Make the Process Successful?

To maintain your both certificates (MLS ASCP & SBB ASCP), you have to get CMP points during your active years.

MLS (ASCP) SBB CM: Application Fee

The ASCP BOC specified a CMP application fee for all its certifications, which is $100.

But if you have multiple certifications, you will get a reduced fee of $20 if their expiration date falls within three months.

Note: in case to submit your CMP declaration after certification expiration, you have to pay $135, which is the fee for your CMP application and expiration certificate.

How to Proceed the Process for MLS (ASCP) SBB CM?

The following is the step-by-step process for your CMP application:

  • Login to go to your ASCP account.
  • To determine your certificate’s current status, you need to “Check Progress” under “My Education.”
  • Make sure to allocate all credits, that you get from ASCP and non-ASCP sources.
  • You will be prompted to send a CMP declaration, once all the credits have been allocated.
  • It is best that you send your CMP declaration at least 3 months before for reviewing by the BOC so you can get time to maintain all properly.
  • After successfully completing the process, you will receive notification of your certificate renewal.

How to Earn Credit for MLS (ASCP) SBB CM?

To meet your CMP point requirements, the ASCP BOC offers many programs, you can participate in them according to your needs.

But the board also allows you to earn these credits from non-ASCP resources like the ASC (American Society for Cytopathology), ASM (American Society for Microbiology), etc.

Note: The credits that you will get from the ASCP will automatically be entered in your ASCP transcript but for the non-ASCP credits, you have to do it manually.
