The ASCP Board of Certification conducts the ASCP medical lab scientist and ASCP blood banking technologist exams for both U.S. and non-U.S. (international) candidates.
Eligibility Routes for MT ASCP
Route 1
- Baccalaureate degree
- Medical lab scientist programs presented by the NAACLS
Route 2
- ASCP MLT credential
- Bachelor’s degree with 16 semester hrs in chemistry & biology (1 semester hr in microbiology and 1 semester hr in biochemistry is also include).
- Clinical experience in related subjects (2 years)
Route 3
- ASCP BOC has banned the requirements of this route.
Route 4
- Baccalaureate degree in biology & chemistry (one semester hr is microbiology & biochemistry is also included)

- Clinical experience (1 year) in blood banking

- Baccalaureate degree with a combination of 45 quarter hrs (30 semester hrs) in biology and chemistry or a bachelor’s degree in chemistry or biological science.
- Blood banking structure program under the supervision of NAACLS-approved medical lab scientist program.
Route 4
- Master’s degree in related subjects
- Blood banking clinical experience (6 months)
Route 5
- Bachelor’s degree in medical lab science or with a mixture of 30 semester hrs in biology & chemistry.
- NAACLS approved medical lab scientist program
For BB ASCPi
Route 1
- Baccalaureate degree
- MLS (ASCPi) certificate
Route 2
- You must have bachelor’ degree in chemistry or biological science or with a combination of 30 semesters hrs in biology & chemistry
- Clinical experience (1 year) in blood banking
Route 3
- Bachelor’s degree (you can get in chemistry/biological science or with the 30-semester hrs combination in biology and chemistry)
- Blood banking clinical training program (including internship).
Route 4
- Master’s degree in the required area
- Clinical experience (6 months) in blood banking.
