MLT ASCP Exam Requirement for U.S Candidates

BOC offers four routes for US candidates. Being a U.S. applicant, you must meet one of the following eligibility criteria for the MLT ASCP test.

Route 1

  • In the last five years, successful completion of an ABHES accredited or NAACLS MLT program.
  • 60 semester hours of academic credit from an approved associate college or university or associate degree from an approved university or college

Route 2

  • As of January 1, 2023, it requires valid CLA(ASCP) certification has been discontinued.

Route 3

Route 4

  • Associate degree from an approved college or university with 6 semester hours in both chemistry and biology with an associate degree or 60 semester hours of academic credit from an approved associate college or university with 6 semester hours in both chemistry and biology
  • Three years of full-time clinical experience from an acceptable laboratory within the last six years in immunology, hematology, blood banking, chemistry, microbiology, and urinalysis/body fluids.

Commonly Required Documentation

  • Official transcript(s) verifying the higher or stated academic requirement (for education within Canada or the U.S.): high school graduation or equivalent, or college or university degree conferred, and or college/university credits.

Route 4 Experience Documentation

It also has two parts:

Part I is related to the applicant's personal information and must be completed by candidates. It is about to applicant’s name, ASCP customer ID #, address, email address, city, state, zip code, and last four digits of the applicant's social security #.

Part II is related to the immediate supervisor or laboratory management and must be signed and completed by them to make it acceptable.

Candidates must have experience with tests in pre- and post-analytical components in all areas including chemistry, immunology, hematology, blood banking, microbiology, and urinalysis and other body fluids.

Applicants must add the letter of authenticity from your laboratory management or immediate supervisor with this experience documentation form. It must be stated that this experience documentation form was dated, signed, and completed by your laboratory management and immediate supervisor.

MLT Program Completion for Route 4(Not for route 1 applicants)

Applicants can only submit the MLT program completion documentation if he/she has 1 year of experience in lieu of.

Like other MLT ASCP experience forms, its part I is also only for applicants and must be filled by her/his. It required information are applicant’s name, address, ASCP customer ID #, email address, city, state, zip code, and last four digits of the applicant’s social security #.

Part II must be signed, verified, and completed by the program director which states that the applicant successfully completed the required program in order to be approved.

Successfully completed   ABHES or NAACLS accredited MLT program, NAACLS accredited MLS program, or medical laboratory science clinical training program (foreign) within the last five years can be equal to one year of acceptable clinical experience.

MLT ASCP Exam Requirement for International Candidates

BOC offers three routes for international candidates. If you want to get an MLT credential, you can check your eligibility from these routes.

Route 1

  • A two-year diploma in Medical Laboratory Science including training in microbiology, hematology, chemistry, and blood banking from an accredited technical institution.

Route 2

  • Chemistry or biological science two-year diploma from an approved educational institution
  • Successful completion of Medical Laboratory Science training in microbiology, hematology, chemistry, and blood banking

Route 3

  • Biological science or chemistry two-year diploma from an accredited educational institution
  •  Three years of clinical experience in hematology, microbiology, chemistry, and blood banking from an approved laboratory

Training Documentation Form for Routes 1 & 2

It has two parts: Part I and Part II.  Part I required the student's name and Name of the Program.

Part II form must be signed and completed by the Program Director to make it acceptable.

Applicants of all eligible clinical training should be completed outside of the classroom as part of their clinical rotation, service, practicum, internship, or laboratory/industrial posting.

Verification of clinical training and ensuring the clinical training in 4 documented areas including microbiology, hematology, blood banking, and chemistry is a big responsibility of the Applicant.

Experience Documentation Form for Route 3

Part I (must be completed by candidate): It requires the applicant's name, ASCP customer ID #, email address, and address.

Part II form should be signed and completed by laboratory management or employer to make it acceptable.

Candidates must be able to ensure his/her experience in four documented areas including microbiology, hematology, blood banking, and chemistry as required for eligibility.

If educational verification is required, an acceptable foreign evaluation agency or the educational institution(s) from which transcripts will be sent must be shown on the online application.
